What is two factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication, abbreviated as 2FA, provides a more secure way of logging in. This means that, in addition to your username and password, you must perform an additional action to access your account. Essentially, two-factor authentication adds a second layer to the identity protection of your account(s). There are various forms of two-factor authentication, such as a code sent to your phone number or via an app that sends a push notification, which you can approve to log in.

Why would you want to use two-factor authentication?

Normally, you log in to your account(s) with a username and password. By adding two-factor authentication, you ensure an extra layer of security. Many people use the same password for various websites or applications. If a malicious party discovers your password, they can access everything. This is something you want to avoid, of course. If a malicious party attempts to log in to an account that requires two-factor authentication, they won't be able to access your account because you won't validate or accept the authentication. Two-factor authentication reduces the chances of unauthorized access to your accounts and all the information they contain. It’s an important security measure for your organization’s data.
