Tips for recognizing phishing emails!

by | Officebox Nieuws | Comments

Phishing emails are regularly circulating. Officebox tries to intercept these emails through the Barracuda spam filter. However, if one manages to slip through, it's important to be aware of how to recognize a phishing email. Below are some practical tips on what to watch out for, as you can never be too safe or cautious.

Phising mails

How do you recognize a phishing email?

  • Always check the sender's email address. Pay special attention to what comes after the '@' symbol, as it is often different from what it should be. This is a key indicator that the email was not sent by the organization the sender is pretending to represent.
  • Look at the salutation. Organizations that know your name will address you using your first and/or last name. If you're addressed with a general term like 'Dear Sir/Madam' or 'Dear Customer,' be cautious.
  • In a phishing email, you're often asked to verify, update, or provide additional personal information by clicking a specific link. Never click on such links without caution, as legitimate organizations rarely request information this way. If you're unsure, it's best to look up the organization's phone number online and ask if they sent the email.
  • Phishing emails often contain (shortened) links to websites, and sometimes you can't tell where you're being directed if you click the link. Check the website address by hovering your cursor (mouse) over the link without clicking on it. This will reveal the website address. Be cautious when clicking on links!
  • Phishing emails often contain attachments, which can install harmful software on your device. Never open an attachment from an email you don't trust.
